BAND OF GOLD
.
Patiently she waits alone, the house feels empty, no one home
It’s good to catch a breath of air and leave behind the pain that’s there
For memories though treasured all, remind her of fate’s bitter call
And now the nights seem cruel and long, her heart and soul have lost their song
The park is full of babes and mothers, dogs and owners, artists, others
Here the good times many fold, youthful zest and flesh now old
Richard down on bended knee, words of love and untold glee
Summers shared upon the grass, a love so strong shall never pass
Fingers nervous, touch the gold of wedding ring now precious, old
That cost a fortune, meant so much, proudly worn though missing touch
She sleeps alone, the bed so vast and dreams so sweetly of the past
Her husband Military strong, fearless, handsome, moustache long
London born and bred remains within the house of laughter, pains
Each photograph and trinket viewed sets the tone and shapes her mood
As Richard’s face is on her mind, his voice so often heard behind
But turning round she sees no trace, and softly cries with demure grace
Five years alone, a widow sad, her family close who make her glad
For simple pleasures deep within sometimes we shed this skin we’re in
A bold facade to hide the truth, as wrinkles trample over youth
And when the doors once more are closed, comes forth the woman no one knows
The park feels restful, lovers walk, hand in hand they smile and talk
She wishes he were with her now, beside her on the bench somehow
A final kiss, a warm embrace, to brush the hair strands from his face
One last farewell before he goes, loved and missed, she hopes he knows
The wedding ring that shiny, sits upon her finger, mind in bits
Reminds her of the life she’s had, not a second wasted, bad
A legacy of family ties, Richards spirit in the eyes
Of daughter, son, grandchildren five, a zest for life and so alive
She wipes away the tears and stands, wishing she could hold his hand
Together through the park they’d walk, eyes adoring, no need to talk
But fair, eternal, life is not, it’s best to treasure what you’ve got
For all we love will one day pass, best live each day as though our last
